Empowering lawyers to build happier work lives

Happy Mind Happy Lawyer is founded by Kanika Kadam, an organizational psychologist and an ex-banking & finance lawyer from India. It is an initiative to improve mental well being of lawyers and provide them with resources and support to build happier work lives.

According to a 2021 global study conducted by International Bar Association which included participants from India, the average mental well-being scores of lawyers in the legal profession was found to be 51%, which suggests a need for a formal assessment of well-being problems. The study also found that 1 in 3 people reported as work having a negative or extremely negative impact on their well-being. These figures are alarming and highlight the need for urgent interventions. As important as it is to heal the wounds, it is equally important to go further and create a happy work life.

Mental health is a state of mental well being that enables people to cope with the stresses of life, realize their abilities, learn well and work well, and contribute to their community. It is more than the absence of mental disorders. It exists on a complex continuum, which is experienced differently from one person to the next, with varying degrees of difficulty and distress.

HMHL believes that the secret to being a happy lawyer lies both with ourselves and in the culture fostered by the legal community. That is why, it offers resources to individual lawyers on how to become happy lawyers and to organisations on how they can create a culture which promotes happiness at work and improves productivity.

We spend a large part of our life working. Let’s make it a happy one!
